EUR/USD today
Is EUR/USD quieter or busier than normal? Which currency is pushing, and which data is still to come? Everything compared with its own history, not with a generic average.
Frequently asked questions
1What does “busier than normal” mean?
We compare today’s range — the distance between the high and the low since 00:00 UTC — with how far a normal EUR/USD day had travelled by the same hour. Below the 25th percentile of those days, it is quieter than normal; above the 75th, busier. We give no verdict in the first hour of the day, because there is still too little range to judge.
2Where do the “normal” figures come from?
From our own price history: one-hour EUR/USD bars over the last two years, Monday to Friday only, with hours in UTC. They are recomputed every day, so they can differ by a pip or two from the article’s, which was measured on a given date.
3Why does the time of day matter?
Because EUR/USD does not move the same at every hour: the bulk of its range comes while London and New York are open together, and it moves far less in the Asian session. That is why we compare with what a normal day had done by the same hour, not with the whole day.
4What is each currency’s relative strength?
It is FOTSI, our strength oscillator for the eight major currencies. For this pair we show only the euro and the dollar: the wider the gap between them, the clearer it is which one is pushing. It measures recent momentum; it does not predict where price will go.
5How often does the page update?
The price, today’s range and the relative strength refresh every minute while the page is open; the calendar, every few minutes. With the market closed, the last full day stays on screen until Sunday’s reopen.
