Frequently asked questions

1

What does “busier than normal” mean?

We compare today’s range — the distance between the high and the low since 00:00 UTC — with how far a normal USD/JPY day had travelled by the same hour. Below the 25th percentile of those days, it is quieter than normal; above the 75th, busier. We give no verdict in the first hour of the day, because there is still too little range to judge.

2

Where do the “normal” figures come from?

From our own price history: one-hour USD/JPY bars over the last two years, Monday to Friday only, with hours in UTC. They are recomputed every day, so they can differ by a pip or two from the article’s, which was measured on a given date.

3

Why does the time of day matter?

Because USD/JPY does not move the same at every hour: its busiest stretch comes while London and New York are open together, but, unlike the European pairs, it also moves a fair amount in the Asian session, because Tokyo is one of its two home markets. That is why we compare with what a normal day had done by the same hour, not with the whole day.

4

What is each currency’s relative strength?

It is FOTSI, our strength oscillator for the eight major currencies. For this pair we show only the dollar and the yen: the wider the gap between them, the clearer it is which one is pushing. It measures recent momentum; it does not predict where price will go.

5

How often does the page update?

The page asks for fresh data every minute while it is open: the price and today’s range move with each one-minute bar, the relative strength is recomputed every five minutes and the calendar refreshes every few minutes. With the market closed, the last full day stays on screen until Sunday’s reopen.
