Frequently asked questions
1What is a pip?
The smallest price move of a pair (0.0001 for most, 0.01 for JPY pairs). Its dollar value depends on the pair and your position size.
2Why does pip value differ between pairs?
Because it depends on the quote currency and its exchange rate to the dollar, which we convert using live quotes.
3What is the difference between a pip and a pipette?
A pipette is a tenth of a pip: the fifth decimal on most pairs (third decimal on JPY pairs). Many brokers quote in pipettes for precision, but value is still measured in pips.
4What is a pip worth on a standard lot?
On a standard lot (100,000 units) of a USD-quoted pair, a pip is worth about 10 USD. On other pairs it varies with the exchange rate, which is why the calculation uses live prices.
5Does pip value change during the day?
Yes, slightly, on pairs whose quote currency is not the dollar, because it depends on the real-time exchange rate. On USD-quoted pairs it is constant.
